The new punishment comes in response to a brutal gang rape and murder in April of a 14 year old girl in Sumatra.
Seven teenage boys were sentenced to 10 years in jail for the crime. Public outcry and calls for chemical castration have now been granted.

This is an amendment to the country’s 2002 law on child protection.
Joko told a news conference:
“The inclusion of such an amendment will provide space for the judge to decide severe punishments as a deterrent effect on perpetrators.”
