Australian Attorneys File Crimes Against Humanity Charges on Aung San Suu Kyi

On Friday, a team of highly respected Australian human rights attorneys filed a private prosecution application to the Melbourne magistrates’ courts against Aung San Suu Kyi, who is currently in Australia, attending the ASEAN Australia special summit.

The legal team has commented on the implementation of the prosecution due to the de-facto Myanmar government leader failing to use her position of authority to condemn the national Myanmar security force from committing genocide of the Rohingya people.

Myanmar Reuters Reporters Case Continues Despite International Condemnation

The Myanmar police have yet to release the two Reuters reports that were arrested last year in December for acquiring “important secret papers” from the police who sparked the refugee crisis of the Rohingya people in the Rakhine state. Their lawyer, Than Zaw Aung has tried to appeal for bail but was dismissed by a judge announcing their next hearing to occur on the 23^rd of January.

The pair is being charged for violating Myanmar’s Official Secrets Act and may be sentenced for up to 14 years. The arrest of the journalists despite widespread criticism from human rights and media groups has exposed the deterioration of press freedom in Myanmar. Media outlets and journalists are wary of reporting on “sensitive topics” in fear of harassment or arrest.

Myanmar’s continual use of colonial-era suppression of the media has caused criticism over the nation’s new civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, a recent Nobel Laureate Prize winner. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Amnesty International have called for the immediate release of journalists. Bill Clinton tweeted that “a free press is critical to a free society and the detention of journalists anywhere is unacceptable”.

Rohingya Massacre Continues Despite Signed Memorandum of Understanding

The Human Rights Watch have called for UN access into Myanmar for a UN-Fact Finding Mission that was previously denied by the Myanmar government. The call follows a violation in the signed Memorandum of Understanding (Nov. 23) between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Myanmar Crackdown on Press Holds Two Reuters Reporters

The two reporters were arrested for investigating the police attacks against the Rohingya people in Myanmar. They were invited to dinner by the police stationed at the Rohingya refugee crisis area and then arrested. Reuters and family cannot get a hold of the reporters as it seems they have essentially disappeared, comments Poppy Mcpherson, a journalist in Bangkok.

The absence of communication can be attributed to Myanmar’s lack of press freedom that has gotten worse since the crimes against the Rohingya people in August became of public knowledge.

Pressure has been put on the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi to help the journalists; however it is apparent that the power is really in the hands of the military.
